Make Good Choices

1Chronicles 6

Daily Thought

One of the lists in 1Chronicles 6 is “the men whom David put in charge of the service of song in the house of the Lord” (v 31): Heman the Singer (v 33) and his two brothers, Asaph, who stood on his right (v 39), and Merari to his left (v 44). Among the names of their forefathers is Ebiasaph, son of Korah, which comes as a surprise. Korah was a rebel against Moses and God . 

Korah gathered 250 leaders to stand before and challenge Moses’s right to lead the people of Israel. Long story short, since God had chosen Moses to lead, his right to lead had been established and “the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households and all the people who belonged to Korah and all their goods” (Numbers 16:32). God ended Korah’s rebellion quickly as a warning to others (Number 26:10). Among the others were sons of Korah who did not die (Numbers 26:11) because did not stand with their father or follow his ways. Character is not determined, it is decided. Make good choices. These sons of Korah included Ebiasaph.

Among the 150 psalms recorded in the book of Psalms, eleven are written by the sons of Korah (Psalm 42, 44-49, 84, 85, 87, 88). They became leaders of worship rather than rebellion.

For a day in your courts is better

These are the men whom David put in charge of the service of song in the house of the Lord (1Chronicles 6:31).

Daily Prayer

Heavenly Father, You seek to save, You delight in redemption, You loved me before I loved You. I was rebellious against my own Creator, wanting to make my own choices, take charge of my own life, and before I even changed, Your Son had already died for my sins. Your irresistible grace saved me. Thank You.

This world offers many passing pleasures, but there is a joy that is forever, surpassing all that the world offers. It is to be Your child, to know my God, to follow my Lord and Savior. You are my God and I delight in You.

Finish the Race

2Kings 20-22

Daily Thought

That Hezekiah enjoyed prosperity was obvious. An envoy of visitors bearing gifts sent by the king of Babylon became an excuse to show off. “Hezekiah welcomed them, and he showed them all his treasure house, the silver, the gold, the spices, the precious oil, his armory, all that was found in his storehouses. There was nothing in his house or in all his realm that Hezekiah did not show them” (2Kings 20:13). Babylon would visit again someday, to make this treasure their own, but this was of little concern to Hezekiah as long as there was “peace and security in my days” (2Kings 20:19).

Hezekiah had begun beautifully. “The Lord was with him; wherever he went out, he prospered” (2Kings 18:7), but success became too much a good thing. You would hope that one who trusted God with his life would trust God with his death, but that was not the case for Hezekiah. When Isaiah the prophet came to him and said, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Set your house in order, for you shall die'” (2Kings 20:1), Hezekiah pleaded with God and wept bitterly, and fifteen years were added to his life.

We pray for results and God answers with opportunities. Hezekiah was given longer life, so he did not bother ordering his house. He would finish badly. He had another son and named him Manasseh, “and Manasseh led them astray to do more evil than the nations had done whom the Lord destroyed before the people of Israel” (2Kings 21:9).

Better to say, as the apostle Paul said, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing” (2Timothy 4:7-8).

Daily Prayer

My Lord, my God, Your commandments will be upon my heart, because they are good for life, my life, and my children’s and their children’s. I will impress them on my children, talk about them when I sit at home and when I walk along the road, when I lie down and when I get up. I will not only teach them, I will live them.

God, bless my household. May my family, my spouse and children, follow You all the days of our lives. As for me and my house, we will serve You.

Forever True

Numbers 33-34

Daily Thought

The LORD commanded Moses to keep a list of the places Israel camped after departing Egypt–“When they went out of the land of Egypt by their companies under the leadership of Moses and Aaron, Moses wrote down their starting places, stage by stage, by command of the Lord, and these are their stages according to their starting places” (Numbers 33:1-2). It is more than a list of places, it is a testimony to the sovereignty and faithfulness of God. No difficulty too great. 

The LORD parted the Red Sea to let his people escape, then closed it and drowned the Egyptian army. When the people of God met danger, God prevailed over their enemies. When they thirst, God supplied water, and fed them daily manna from heaven. Miriam died at Kadesh (v 36), and the LORD provided another woman to lead the choir. Aaron died at Mount Hor (vv 38-39), and his son Eleazar stepped in. Eventually Moses died, and Joshua succeeded him. In all of these changes, God remained the same, true to his people. 

God is great, and in the midst of our freedom to wander, he still accomplishes his purpose. The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Command the people of Israel, and say to them, When you enter the land of Canaan…” (Numbers 34:1-2). No matter, they are going to the Promised Land.

Daily Prayer

Faithful Father, no matter what, no matter the ways I wander, no matter my heart’s rebellion, you came to seek and to save me. You are forever true and I am eternally grateful. Thank You for Your grace, for Your long-suffering, for Your patience and persistence. I strayed and you found me and put me on the right path.

You have invited me to follow You. I will follow. I will be a disciple of Your Son, Jesus Christ. I will learn from You and grow in Your likeness, so that I might display Your glory and point others to the way of life.

What Difference Does It Make?

Numbers 5-6

Daily Thought

We place our hand on the Bible and close with “so help me God,” but what does that mean? What difference does it make? Jesus said it shouldn’t, “Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’” (Matthew 5:37), so what does it add to add God’s name to an oath? In one sense, nothing. It is your character, not God’s, that will determine whether you are trustworthy or a liar.

Yet “a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to separate himself to the Lord” (Numbers 6:2) adds several extra toppings like “he shall separate himself from wine and strong drink” and “no razor shall touch his head” and “he shall not go near a dead body” (Numbers 6:3, 5, 6). This is not a vow to be sober or grow a beard or stay clear of death, but to love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind and strength, and the rest is externals, symbols of separation, signs telling the world to watch me and see if my vow has made a difference. These are external signs inviting the world to watch and see the internal character of a man or woman of God.

When a Christian accused of being a hypocrite responds, “I’m no more than the next guy,” isn’t that the problem? When I place my hand on the Bible, the question is not do I take this oath seriously, but do I take my God seriously. When I take God’s name upon myself, it should make a difference. The world is watching.

Daily Prayer

My Holy God, You are good and just and holy and loving and full of grace. Your Son was pierced for my transgressions, He was crushed for my iniquities; the punishment that brought me peace was upon Him; by His wounds I am healed.  May I take sin as seriously as He did.

Thank You, Father, for salvation, for forgiveness, for the atonement for my sins offered by the death of Jesus Christ. Thank You Jesus for taking what I deserve so that I will share in what You deserve.  May my love You for You be seen in my desire for righteousness.

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. So shall he put his name upon his people and he will bless them.
