Leviticus 11-13<\/a><\/p>\nDaily Thought<\/h2>\n
God declared certain foods unclean. Lots of reasons have been offered for this.\u00a0Perhaps there is symbolism in the choice of animals.\u00a0The clean animals represent virtues, the unclean vices.\u00a0Or maybe the unclean animals were the ones that the godless countries around Israel used in their pagan worship.\u00a0One idea is that the unclean animals and the unclean conditions were psychologically repulsive.\u00a0Others argue that certain animals, scavengers mostly, were unclean because they were literally unclean.\u00a0They were unhealthy and lacked hygiene.\u00a0But then, all of a sudden, in Acts 10, God tells Peter that he can eat everything. God declares all these animals clean. Did they suddenly become healthy, as well?<\/p>\n
There is a similar question that may help: why did God choose Israel?\u00a0Why didn’t he choose the Egyptians or the Canaanites or some other people group.\u00a0Certainly, it wasn’t because the Israelites were better or healthier or less repulsive than the others.\u00a0They weren’t.\u00a0God chose them because he is God and he gets to choose.\u00a0He may have his reasons (he may not), but he does not have to tell us, and he didn’t.\u00a0He simply chose.\u00a0It may sound arbitrary, but I’m eternally grateful he chose me, and I didn’t give him a good reason to do that, either.<\/p>\n
He called his people to be holy.\u00a0To be holy is to be set apart, to be distinguished from what is common.\u00a0The distinction between clean and unclean reminded the Israelites that God demands purity through obedience and sacrifice.\u00a0We obey God, not necessarily because it makes sense or benefits us (it does), but because of who he is, the holy, good, righteous, full of grace, all-loving God of the heavens and the earth.<\/p>\n
Daily Prayer<\/h2>\n
Holy God, You are good.\u00a0May my life be holy, set apart for Your purposes.\u00a0You have made me a saint, righteous because of the work of Your Son.\u00a0You have filled me with Your Holy Spirit.\u00a0Work Your salvation through me from the inside out.\u00a0Take my desires and make them Yours, so that what I do will reflect Your character.<\/p>\n
God, I have choices in front of me everyday, clean and unclean.\u00a0May I discern the difference and choose wisely.\u00a0May I trust in Your ways and follow closely.<\/p>\n
